What Is Pet Wellness All About?

We all wish that our pets could be with us our whole lives. Greencross Vets’ goal is to make the time they do have with us as healthy and happy as possible. The key to a long and healthful life is being able to detect problems early. Regular health check-ups mean we can detect problems early on, encouraging your pet’s good health and keeping them around for years to come.

How can I help my pet achieve their best health?

Our pets age around seven years faster than we do. This means taking them to the veterinarian once a year is the equivalent of you visiting your doctor or dentist once every seven years. That’s why all furry family members need a twice-yearly health and wellness check-up.

Regular wellness check-ups allow your veterinarian to detect, treat, or better yet, prevent problems before they become life-threatening. They also provide you with the opportunity to ask your vet questions about nutrition, behaviour, dental health, and other issues.

What does a wellness check-up include?

Wellness overview

A chance for you to tell your veterinarian any changes in behaviour or physical appearance you have noticed.

Physical examination

Your veterinarian will feel your pet’s musculoskeletal system, abdomen, and head and neck areas for abnormalities. A stethoscope will be used to listen to your pet’s heart and lungs. Your pet’s eyes, ears, and mouth will also be checked for age-related problems, such as cataracts, dental problems, and ear canal disorders.

Diagnostic tests

These include blood work, urinalysis, ultrasounds, and X-rays. After their physical examination, your vet will decide which of these tests, if any, are necessary.

Faecal examination

To check for intestinal parasites.

Recommendations on wellness care

Diet, dental care, dental scale and polish, parasite control, vaccinations, behaviour, and grooming are all considered in your vet’s recommendations for your pet’s healthcare.
